It is our intention to not only address the physical tension brought on by pregnancy, but to also bring some quiet and relaxation to your day. We strive to take the edge off that overwhelmed feeling, in an attempt to allow you to enjoy this truly marvelous time period. A happy body equals a happy mama and that is good news for everyone, especially baby!

  • Benefits of Prenatal Massage

    #1Prenatal massage provides a large number of physiological and psychological benefits to both the pregnant woman and her unborn child. Just a few of these are:
    • Tension relief in the muscles supporting the new weight and changing center of gravity
    • Improved muscular and fascial flexibility
    • Relief from back pain, headaches, leg cramps, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fatigue
    • Improved vascular flow, providing more oxygen and nutrients to mother and baby
    • Stimulated lymphatic system, which in turn increases immunity and removes toxins
    • Stabilizing of hormones and relaxation of the nervous system, aiding in less stress and better sleeps, along with regular endorphin releases that help minimize discomfort

  • Positioning

    #2There are many conflicting opinions and viewpoints about the proper way to perform a prenatal massage. It is well known that the right side-lying position gives baby the opportunity to compress the maternal inferior vena cava, which in turn interrupts the normal return of blood to the mother’s heart. Additionally, the side-lying position increases pressure on the mother’s hip joints. A supported, face down position allows for proper spine alignment, normal blood flow and no pressure on the hips.

    Throughout centuries of time, pregnant women have been engaging in activities that put their abdomen into an unsupported ‘hanging’ position. Think of women working in fields, scrubbing floors, gardening, lovemaking, and of course labouring in an all fours position. Not only has this sort of activity been going on for hundreds of years, it has been encouraged and promoted by midwives and doctors alike! During childbirth, many women instinctively go into an all fours position and request strong pressure be applied to their sacrum and or lumbar spine, for several hours at a time. It is our belief that if this sort of normal and aged behaviour does not jeopardize the integrity of the uterine ligaments, neither will a well supported face down position during a 60-90 minute massage.

    Our deep trust in the body’s natural ability to protect itself from harm, has led us to choose to offer a variety of position choices. At the outset of your first visit with us we will assess your body shape and give you the opportunity to try one of the face down positions we have available, to see if it is comfortable for you and baby. If needed, we will add extra support to ensure your comfort. With each subsequent visit we will be keeping our eye on your growing belly and make adjustments as needed.

    It is always advisable to check in with your doctor or midwife before adding a new therapy into your wellness program. Even if you have always included massage therapy as part of your healthcare plan, it is still a good idea to consult your medical caregiver before your first visit with us.

Your comfort is our focus

At purely Massage we offer choices in body positions during your prenatal massage to ensure the best possible treatment for your body. Our pregnancy table and specifically designed bolsters allow you to lay face down safely and comfortably. If these options don’t feel right, we will give you a body pillow to hug, while lying on your side. In fact we will adjust your position during your massage if need be!

Magnesium levels are often low in pregnant women and can be one cause of muscle cramps. Good sources of magnesium are: cereals, nuts, milk, fish and meat.

The growth and development of your unborn child is intricately woven into your overall health, mental and emotional state. What is good for you, is in fact, good for your baby.
